Hypatia of Alexandria is said to be the first woman scholar, a student of astronomy, math and philosophy. Like all smart women, she was used as a scapegoat for men's political squabbles. Caught in the middle of the political feud between Orestes, Roman Governor of Alexandria and Cyril, the Bishop of Alexandria, Hypatia was murdered by a Christian mob. Some historians say that in Hypatia's wake, classical antiquity died alongside her. Even empires fall. Even concrete crumbles.
